The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
