The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
