Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
