Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered multiple other vandalized cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests suggest the fluid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; officials are currently not cognizant of any injuries in association with the incident," they commented.
City officials stated they were working "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.
An important official commented the attack made him speechless and needed to be addressed promptly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine victims by a gunman targeting residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
