Individuals who experienced sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have voiced fresh optimism following their initial meeting with the new Pope at the Holy See.

The board president, heading Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the pontiff's choice to engage with them so soon in his leadership spoke volumes about his commitment to tackling the issue.

Worldwide Strict Policy Pushed

The group is pushing for a worldwide zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any priest who confesses to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a minor. This policy has already been adopted in the United States.

The Pope acknowledged that there is "opposition in certain regions of the world" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is pushback," Hickey remarked.

Inherited Issue

The new Pope, who took the role in spring, has taken on this longstanding problem that has plagued the Church for many years.

Previous efforts to address the situation included an historic summit on child abuse within the institution and revisions to canon law to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Personal Connection

For Hickey, who uses they/them pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the policy is personal. The North American advocate revealed they were victimized by a clergy member who was later moved between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his leadership, because we want to work with him," they stated. "Both sides share the common objective, we seek to end abuse by religious officials."

Significant Encounter

Multiple representatives of the organization, which represents survivors and advocates from over thirty nations, met with the Pontiff in his Vatican office.

The meeting, initially planned for a brief period, lasted to a sixty minutes, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was characterized as "very understanding" when hearing the account of a female survivor abused at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

They added the Pope was "compassionate" about their personal experience and seemed "modest, funny, and very down to earth."

"Survivors have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," Hickey stated. "I felt like he was sincere, practical, and very open and keen to work with us."

Church Regulations Reforms

The organization is advocating that changes to church regulations will facilitate the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy globally.

They have spoken with specialists and compiled documents that they plan to present to the pontiff.

"He appeared engaged in looking at it," Hickey noted.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recently released Vatican-commissioned document highlighted the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or removal of Church leaders or staff in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The report also pointed out that victims repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for bishops and senior officials to be made responsible for inaction and cover-up."

Moving Forward

Hickey shared they informed the Pope at the beginning of their meeting: "This represents as much a risk for him to participate in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the encounter, they expressed optimism for progress.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, uniting and establishing a relationship and continuing to build that relationship is a step in the correct path," Hickey stated.

They concluded that they told with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a difficult period, I believe like we can alter how the story ends - he valued that."
