WHO Sounds Concern Over Severe Shortage of Obesity Medications

Under a tenth of individuals who could benefit from GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy have access to them, states the global health agency as it releases its first guidance on the medications.

Considering over a billion individuals worldwide currently living with obesity, it is advocating for increased and just access to this class of drugs.

Based on forecasts, more than two billion will be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The latest guidelines acknowledges that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be treated with thorough and lifelong care," stated WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, limited production capacity, and supply-chain constraints are key barriers to widespread availability to the jabs that can help people shift substantial weight, explains the organization.

GLP-1 Therapy Supply Crisis

Even under the present best projected outlook, the supply of these medications would only suffice for around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, according to the WHO.

The recommendation encourages nations and manufacturers to expand availability, via strategies including licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is due to expire in multiple nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Jabs Function

GLP-1 drugs replicate a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and enhance satiety so individuals consume fewer calories.

Individuals usually see weight reduction after several weeks of starting on the once-weekly jabs.

Research indicates users may regain a significant portion a year later of halting the treatment, because their normal food cravings come back.

Being above a healthy weight raises your chance for developing diseases, like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and specific malignancies.

Obesity impacts people in all nations and was responsible for over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
