Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Players will gain the option to contest particular rulings made by the official, following the system already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
